Lower Back Exercises To Increase Your Core Strength

When working on core strength, too many people focus on the six-pack abs we all want, but neglect the lower back exercises. For true core strength, the lower back area is crucial, and in any kind of workout program - or even in day-to-day life - lower back strength can go a long way in preventing back injuries.

Gentle stretching and controlled exercise and movement can be effective in speeding recovery from back injuries, but intensive exercise could seriously worsen your pain or injury.

But if you are fit and well, many exercises can improve your lower back strength. One of the more effective programs is yoga - a series of stretches and poses designed to enhance both strength and general physical fitness.

Yoga training is a balanced approach, focusing on functional movements. The forms and postures it prescribes help avoid any neglect of the back muscles. There are many muscles in the back, and if they are not exercised in tandem, they can become tight... leading to distortion of the spine and back pain, or unexpected injuries when these muscles are suddenly needed.

While a yoga class can be fun and give you more personal instruction, it can also be done in the privacy of your own home, with the help of a DVD or even a book that includes the positions you need.

Each of the yoga exercises provides different action on the spine and providing balance.

As you practice, move into the positions slowly, and be sure to follow all instructions. Note especially the correct head position. Hold each position for 2-3 minutes at a time; you should find that you can comfortably increase the stretch as your muscles adjust to the pose.

Yoga is a long-term discipline, and you should not expect to stretch to the same extent the teacher does - especially if you have a more muscular build, which tends to be less flexible. There are also gender differences in how far one can stretch in certain poses; this is natural, and should not concern you. It is not a competition, it is about increasing your own flexibility within the range you find comfortable.

It is key to remember that yoga should never stress the muscles or the spine. Do not stretch to your absolute limits; you should be able to breathe freely, without constriction while doing your lower back exercises.

We do, of course, have to remind you that before undertaking any exercise program you should consult your health care professional, especially if you have a recent injury, medical condition, or existing back pain.
